Investigating Extortion in South Africa: The Rising Threat of Sextortion and How to Combat It?

Introduction

Extortion is a serious crime that has taken on new forms in the digital age, with sextortion emerging as a particularly alarming issue in South Africa. This type of extortion involves perpetrators coercing victims, often teenagers, into sharing explicit images or videos, which are then used to blackmail them. Understanding the dynamics of sextortion, its impact on teens, and the role of a private investigator is crucial in addressing this growing problem. This article will explore the challenges teens face, offer preventive strategies, and emphasize the importance of professional help when dealing with sextortion.

What is Sextortion?

Sextortion is a form of digital extortion where a perpetrator uses explicit content as leverage to blackmail victims. This crime typically begins when a predator gains access to compromising images or videos of the victim, often through hacking, catfishing, or by deceiving the victim into sending the material under false pretences. The demands can range from money to more explicit content, leaving victims feeling trapped and powerless. Due to the emotional impact and potential for severe consequences, involving a private investigator can be vital in preventing further harm.

Prominent platforms where extortionists frequently operate include Adsafrica, Tinder, and Facebook. A common scenario involves a male victim engaging in conversation on one of these sites. During the exchange, the perpetrator sends a nude or explicit image and persuades the victim to reciprocate. Once the victim shares a compromising image, the extortionist begins their scheme, sometimes conducting a thorough background check to gather more information about the victim, such as:

  • Does he attend a well-known private school?

  • Is he active on social media platforms?

  • Can they exploit his connections with school friends?

  • What do his parents do for a living, and are they considered middle-class or wealthy?

This background check helps determine the extortionist's demands, which can range from as little as R500 to as much as R50,000.

There is no doubt that extortionists are targeting prominent boys' schools in South Africa, where they see their ideal prey, as well as married men. This is a disturbing attack on vulnerable teens. Unfortunately, the South African Police Service (SAPS) does not provide statistics on the number of extortion victims who have taken their own lives, but the figures are believed to be alarmingly high.

How Sextortion Affects Teens in South Africa

Teenagers are particularly vulnerable to sextortion due to their active use of social media and messaging apps. Predators often create fake profiles, pretending to be someone the teen’s age to build trust. Once explicit images are obtained, they threaten to share the content with family, friends, or the public unless the victim complies with their demands, which most commonly revolve around money.

The psychological impact of sextortion on teens can be devastating. Victims often experience severe anxiety, depression, shame, and, in extreme cases, thoughts of self-harm. Many teens, out of fear of exposure, feel too embarrassed to seek help, increasing their vulnerability. This is where the expertise of a private investigator becomes essential. They can act quickly and discreetly, providing support while working to minimize further harm. At Royal Investigations, we have successfully traced suspects within hours, underscoring how time-sensitive these cases can be. The sooner you seek help, the better the chances of stopping the exploitation. In many cases, adult males also fall victim to extortion. The suspects are manipulative and use clever techniques to lure victims into sending this private content.

Role of a Private Investigator in Extortion Cases:

If you fall victim to sextortion, contacting a private investigator is a critical step in managing the situation. Royal investigations specialize in digital forensics, tracking down perpetrators, gathering evidence, and collaborating with authorities to ensure justice is served. Unlike traditional law enforcement, a professional private investigator can act swiftly and discreetly, reducing the risk of further exposure for the victim. The South African Police Service is under resourced and lack the necessary urgency to act decisively.

Hiring a private investigator means having access to the tools and knowledge needed to trace digital footprints, recover deleted data, and identify the perpetrators. Our expertise allows us to help victims regain control over their lives. At Royal Investigations, our objective is clear: to investigate the case, identify the suspect, and ensure they are apprehended swiftly.

How to Prevent Falling Victim to Sextortion

While it’s essential to know how to react if sextortion occurs, prevention is even more critical. Here are effective strategies to protect teens from extortion:

  1. Educate Teens About Digital Safety: Make sure they understand the risks of sharing personal and explicit images online. This could have far reaching consequences.

  2. Enable Privacy Settings: Ensure social media accounts are set to private, and encourage caution when adding or communicating with others online. An experienced investigator can help identify suspicious profiles.

  3. Avoid Sharing Explicit Content: Encourage teens to refrain from sending explicit images, even in trusted relationships, as these images can be misused. It may later be used as ‘revenge porn’.

  4. Recognize Warning Signs: Demands for explicit content or threats are red flags. Save any evidence, always maintain communication, and consider consulting a private investigator. There’s a reason why I recommend you to maintain communication with a sextortionist; this would buy enough time to gather crucial information and also apprehend the suspect when he least expect it. The element of surprise is a major advantage.

  5. Use Strong Passwords and Security Measures: Secure accounts with strong, unique passwords and enable two-factor authentication to prevent unauthorized access.

Swift action is essential. Here’s what to do:

  1. Gather as much information as possible: This will later serve as evidence and be used to potentially trace the suspect.

  2. Reach out to someone: If you are a teen, reach out to your patents. The sooner there’s intervention, the better the chance of mitigating further harm.

  3. Save All Evidence: Take screenshots of any threats, demands, and explicit content. This information will be crucial for law enforcement and your private investigators.

If you or someone you know is facing sextortion, do not hesitate to seek help. Reach out to Royal Investigations who can navigate the complexities of digital crimes, secure your privacy, and work toward bringing the perpetrators to justice. Acting quickly and decisively is the best way to regain control over the situation.

Sextortion is considered a schedule 5 offence. This pose serious repercussion for those apprehended and tried in a criminal court. Many people perceive sextortion as a petty or minor crime, this is not true. Suspects could face a lengthy custodial sentence if convicted.

What parents need to know about sextortion?

Don't turn away your child when they reach out for help. In many cases, this is a last desperate attempt to seek support. Children who find the courage to ask for help are already deeply traumatized, and many others don't seek assistance at all, leading to self-harm. Sextortion can cause long-lasting mental health issues in teenagers.

SUCCESFUL CASES:

Royal Investigation had played a pivotal role in numerous successful cases relating to sextortion. For obvious reasons we will not mentioned the victims’ identity. We will also not divulge any investigative techniques used to track and trace the extortionist:

Case Study No:1 : Sextortion Incident

In 2022, a victim was targeted in a sextortion scheme orchestrated by someone using the alias "Beslin Smith," who claimed to be a 20-year-old student from the University of Johannesburg. The victim received explicit images from "Beslin," and, despite initial reluctance, was persuaded to send a nude image of himself. As the exchange continued, "Beslin" convinced him to share a full-length image that included his face, ignoring the red flags, the victim sent the image.

Unbeknownst to the victim, "Beslin" was compiling a profile on him. At the time, the victim was a promising athlete, endorsed by a well-known sports brand, which required him to maintain a strong social media presence. This made him an ideal target for sextortion.

Once "Beslin" had acquired enough compromising images, the threats began. Within minutes, the victim received multiple demands, leading to him transferring R10,000 to try to stop the extortion. Unfortunately, despite paying, the demands continued.

Realizing he could not end this on his own, the victim bravely sought help from his father, who contacted Royal Investigations for assistance. The investigative team launched a thorough investigation, eventually tracing the suspect to Diepkloof, Soweto. On March 30, 2022, 23-year-old Rivalani Manganyi was arrested in a coordinated operation with Stellenbosch SAPS and Crime Intelligence. Manganyi had been using fake profiles to lure unsuspecting victims into his sextortion scheme.

Manganyi was transported to the Stellenbosch precinct, where he is currently standing trial. This case underscores the importance of vigilance and swift action to combat sextortion, and it is through dedicated efforts that justice can be served against such predatory behavior.

Case Study No:2 : Sextortion Incident

Sextortion Case Study: January 2024 Incident

In January 2024, a sextortion case involving a professional football player was reported to Royal Investigations. The victim, a successful athlete who had once played for the National Team, was targeted while at a training camp. He received an Instagram message from someone using the name "Laura Porter," who claimed to be from Sunnyside, Pretoria. After initiating a conversation, "Laura" sent a nude "one view" picture and persuaded the victim to send a similar image of himself.

Almost immediately, the sextortion began. The extortionist, aware of the victim's professional status, made demands for large sums of money, threatening to inform the team manager and expose the compromising images across social media platforms.

Recognizing the seriousness of the situation, the victim sought assistance from Royal Investigations. Within seven days, the investigation team was on a flight to Johannesburg International Airport, followed by a 454 km drive to Giyani, a rural area in Limpopo. There, two suspects were arrested in connection with the sextortion scheme. They are currently standing trial.

This case highlights how sextortionists exploit the vulnerabilities of high-profile individuals, using threats to coerce payments. It underscores the importance of seeking professional help to address and put an end to such criminal activities.
